2nd LTTA in Herentals, Belgium

Around 35 teachers from schools in Turkey, Croatia, Portugal, Sweden and Belgium are meeting in Herentals this week to think about climate change and how they can better fit it into secondary education. Tom Vandoninck, director of GO! Campus De Vesten in Herentals, welcomed the foreign delegations on Monday in the Carmel on the Grote Markt.

The tropical weather conditions in which the reception took place were a clear indication that climate change really is a topic. “In the light of this Erasmus exchange, the teachers will carry out scientific research into climate change, its consequences and possible solutions in a school environment. Through these experiences, we hope to further strengthen our teachers in their competencies to integrate STEM education with climate change topics.”

During this week, the teachers took part in various workshops and trips related to the environment are on the program. “In a local workshop, we will also show how Herentals is helping to combat climate change, such as the works on the Nete and the paving in the city,” it seems. All participants gained experience and developed their competences to integrate STEAM education into Climate Change topics. 

As well as raising awareness among students, the project also wants to focus on young people. “We have to believe in young people, because they’re the ones who are going to take care of the Earth for us.” (mph).
